Sleep Hyperhidrosis, or ‘night sweating’, is the occurrence of heavy sweating (or hyperhidrosis) while sleeping. Someone who suffers from the night sweats may also sweat heavily during the day, but may not – the two are not necessarily connected. It most commonly occurs in early adulthood but can happen at any time of life.

Night sweats may occur for genetic reasons and may be relatively harmless. However, they can be distressing and disrupt sleep patterns if severe; the sufferer may be frequently awakened due to the discomfort of damp sleepwear, or if the sufferer sleeps in the nude, due to damp sheets.

Night sweating affects many people. If you suffer from excessive sweating while sleeping then it is a good idea to find out the cause as soon as you can. Naturally, the first possibility is that your central heating is too high, the weatehr too warm or humid, or your duvet is thicker than necessary. But if these causes can be dismissed, then it is a good policy to seek medical advice, simply to ensure it is nothing more serious. An infection could be behind your heavy night sweating, or a sickness, or even diabetes could cause heavy sweating during sleep. If you find out quickly, then you can move on to a cure quickly also.

Many people suffer from excessive sweating. There are those that have the issue of Hyperhidrosis, a condition which causes the sweat glands in one or more areas of the body to become overactive, and other people have an issue where they sweat a lot if they do the least bit of exercise, or if they exert themselves in any way. Typically these people go about their lives living with a sense of embarrassment as a result, and trying their best to deal with it in the most effective way possible. Still others, have the difficulty of unnecessary sweating while sleeping, an issue that affects thousands of people and a lot of them simply suffer quietly, because it’s a problem that doesn’t attract a ton of attention.

Someone who suffers from sleep hyperhidrosis will usually experience a higher core body temperature during sleep. It is this which causes the sweating. It may be caused by an infection of some kind, the medication a sufferer is taking, an overactive glandular problem affecting the thyroid, for example, or it may be due to an illness or other condition such as diabetes. In fact, there are so many possibilities that the best advice is to seek medical help. In the majority of cases, whatever the cause, it is highly treatable.

The important thing to understand is that some causes of night sweats may be relatively harmless, others may not and can be a sign of a serious underlying condition. So, while there can be several possible causes of excessive sweating at night, it is important to distinguish night sweats due to medical causes from those that occur simply because the sleep environment is too warm, either because the bedroom is unusually hot or because there are too many covers on the bed.

As for the more common, and less serious, causes – among the most common causes behind night sweating in women over the age of 40 is related to the hormonal changes of menopause and perimenopause: especially common during the menopause transition years. Whilst this is very annoying, it is not dangerous and nor is it an indicator of a serious condition; although medical advice should always be sought. Some of the many ways of relieving yourself of some of the discomfort of nigth sweating si to keep a glass of water by your bedside, and consider wearing moisture wicking pyjamas. As a final reassurance – many people who suffered from night sweating have found relief.
