Sports athletes have come to rely on their chiropractors more than just about any other medical professional. Once the news was out and that chiropractic care could treat more than sore backs their waiting rooms were filled to overflowing with people eagerly awaiting their turn for treatment. Chiropractic care has become a sort of hidden secret for success in sports.

The use of this type of care has been examined thoroughly across National Football League teams in the US. When asked about chiropractic care use and referral most answered that they had been treated personally by a chiropractor.

A big percentage of NFL teams use chiropractors in an official role, as part of their personnel, but almost all trainers had referred a patient to a chiropractor outside their payroll for evaluation or treatment. Not that the NFL players actually need a referral, with a hefty percentage of them seeking out a chiropractor of their choice without any referral at all.

Many of the trainers also agreed that players with suspected spinal subluxations (the technical term for spinal misalignments) must be referred to a chiropractor; but even more trainers agreed that there is a place for a chiropractor in the NFL. In addition, these trainers understand that the role of a sports’ chiropractor is different from the one of a team physician.

Not only do football players use chiropractors but so do just about every other professional athlete, at least in one capacity or another. John Stockton for one. When he was asked to explain why, he answered that although he was not an expert in chiropractic care and what the discipline comprised, he knew it was not just about adjustment. The importance of it was balancing the demands of the high impact sport he played. He continued saying it has been great for him and his family, and that right next to chiropractic care, what kept him being a success was the love for the game and having fun with his family.

With such a huge amount of evidence and testimonial from high profile athletes, not only athletes, but even sedentary people have reaped tremendous benefits from chiropractic treatment.

Is A Chiropractor A Doctor Of Medicine?

Not Fully Understood

In the medical field of chiropractic, a mean of reducing or eliminating pain and disease while not introducing any form of chemical or surgery as primary treatment. This means unleashing the body’s natural healing power by opening up channels of energy that may be impinged. These avenues send the body’s natural form of signals called nerve impulses and are important to coordinate healing and identify any other problems within the body.

It’s unfortunate that the majority of people believe this is all there is to health care. There truth is there is more to health care than drugs and surgery! A great deal more!

Sad to say, but even some chiropractic patients haven’t a real clear understanding of what chiropractic is. And for those who have never been to a chiropractor, most are totally misinformed as to the make up of the profession. The fact is chiropractic is the largest drug-free form of health care and the third largest form of any health care in North America.

What exactly defines Chiropractic?

The term “chiropractic” is a combination of two Greek words that mean “hand” and “practice”. That is a very descriptive name in that the medical practice is done with the hands and there is a lot of action involved in the practice. Given that the practitioner is involved so physically with the client this name is a fitting moniker.

The basic function of chiropractic is that adjustment of joints, which is done largely on the spine to free up the signals of the nerves, but can be done on nearly any joint. These adjustments are called “manipulations” and are designed and intended to position the bones in a joint at the correct locations.

Can They Be Compared To A General Practitioner?

So is the training of a chiropractor as rigorous as that of a medical doctor? The answer is a resounding, yes. Today’s doctor of chiropractic receives an extensive educational background beginning with three years of pre-chiropractic study. From there they advance into a four-year course of study. A student of chiropractic spends as many hours in the study of human physiology as that of a medical doctor. Chiropractic programs require a minimum of 4,200 hours of combined classroom, laboratory, and clinical experience.

The most significant difference between is the focus of the education. Most doctors are trained in pharmacology and the chiropractors are trained in spine health.

How Effective Is A Chiropractor?

Many people have felt that sudden and sharp pain resulting from a lower back injury. To treat it, you can expect everything from expensive pain medicines to painful stretches. No matter how you plan to treat it you have to include having a chiropractor adjust your back as a part of it. Without it you may be missing a vital part of your prescription.

Chiropractors use quick movements that extend joints beyond their usual range of motion in one way or another. It doesn’t involve damaging a joint or bone, but it can be a bit frightening and uncomfortable to some people. Afterward, there can be some minor pain or discomfort but that does decrease rapidly in most cases. Then you are one step closer to being better than before.

A regular routine visit should be enough to keep most significant back problems at bay. Most people can get away with 1 to 2 visits per week and still see dramatic results in the health of their back. Depending on the severity of the back problem, regular treatment can correct nearly any problem over time. Some take months while other may take years, but progress is inevitable with a good adjustment routine.

The procession may go something like this. Once you visit the Chiropractor, they will probably lay you down on a special table that automatically moves you to loosen up your lower back muscles and joints. After several minutes on that table, the doctor will come in and assess your condition and see if he can adjust you, or if you need some additional preparatory treatment.

After your back is loosened up, the doctor will contort your body into positions that you may feel a stretching sensation in your body, and then the doctor will apply a sudden force to a specific point on your body. In all likelihood and ideally you will feel a “pop”. After a series of these adjustments, you can follow up with some massage treatment and maybe schedule your next appointment.

The value in a chiropractic regime is that your joints will stay fluid and movable, and you may even experience a substantial reduction in pain right away.
